Bears Win Three Bouts, Wrestling Falls to Bucknell, 28-10

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ophir Bernstein won via major decision, and sophomore Justin Staudenmayer and senior Ricky McDonald each won bouts, but Brown University wrestling fell to Bucknell University, 28-10, on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears (2-5, 1-2 EIWA) took back-to-back bouts at 174 and 184 pounds, but the visiting Bison (11-3, 5-0 EIWA) won seven of the meet's 10 bouts to take their second victory of the day after topping Harvard 26-9 earlier in the afternoon.

At 184 pounds, Bernstein (Allen, Texas) registered a 12-1 major decision win over Tom Sleigh. He notched the only points of the first period with a takedown late in the frame before using a reversal to go up 4-0 early in the second.

He recorded a three-point near fall midway through the second period, and added a two-point near fall later in the frame to take a 9-0 lead into the third period. He then charted a takedown and a point for riding time for the 12-1 win.

McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) gained a 13-6 victory over Rory Bonner at 174 pounds. He garnered two takedowns early in the first period and tacked on another before the period concluded.

In the second period, he posted a reversal and then a takedown to take a 10-4 lead heading into the third frame. He added a takedown and a riding time point in the 13-6 win.

Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) tallied the Bears' other victory with a 5-1 win via decision over Rustin Barrick at 157 pounds. He earned an extended count on a three-point near fall in the second period. He notched an escape early in the third frame and charted an additional point for 1:29 of riding time.

Next, Brown concludes its four-meet home stand with a dual against Binghamton on Jan 31 at 1 p.m.
