NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) scored late in the first period to tie the game, but Yale answered back with four goals in the second stanza as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the No. 18 Bulldogs, 5-1, in Saturday's ECAC matchup at Ingalls Rink.
Yale improves to 11-4-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the conference, while the Bears drop to 4-13 on the season and 1-9 in ECAC play.
Five different players scored goals for the Bulldogs, while Alex Lyon made 17 saves in net. Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) registered 33 saves for the Bears.
Yale went ahead early in the first period, when Mike Doherty scored four minutes into the contest. The sophomore was set up in front of the crease and tapped in a one-timer on a feed from John Hayden to give the home side the 1-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs outshot the Bears by a 16-7 margin, but Lappin evened up the game with 1:02 left in the stanza. Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) carried the puck into Yale territory and quickly found Lappin to the right, who blasted a shot past Lyon to tie the game at one goal apiece heading into the first intermission. Sophomore Zack Pryzbek (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) also earned an assist on the play.
The two teams remained deadlocked to start the second period, before Hayden scored at 7:10 to push the Bulldogs out in front, 2-1. Yale scored three more goals in the final seven minutes of the stanza to build a four-goal lead. After Nate Repensky scored at 13:51, Rob O'Gara and Matt Killian notched consecutive goals to push the Bulldogs in front, 5-1.
Brown enjoyed a strong bid at the end of the second period, when Joe Prescott (Norwell, Mass.) set up Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, Mass.) in front for the one-timer attempt, but Lyon stretched out for the save to preserve the four-goal advantage at the second break.
Brown and Yale traded power-play opportunities early in the third period, but both teams killed off the respective extra-man attacks. Yale killed off another penalty later in the period to seal the victory.
