TAMPA, Fla. – Sophomore Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) scored his first goal of the season late in the second half, but the Brown men's soccer team could not climb back from an early deficit as the Bears fell at the University of South Florida, 3-1, in Thursday evening's non-conference game at Corbett Stadium.
Brown drops to 2-3 on the season, while the Bulls improve to 3-2 overall.
South Florida opened up the scoring in the 15th minute when Edwin Moalosi scored from the middle of the box about 15 yards out to push the home side on top, 1-0. South Florida outshot the Bears by a 7-3 margin during the opening 45 minutes.
South Florida tacked on another goal just 53 seconds into the second half when Matthew O'Neal scored on a free kick to give the Bulls the two-goal advantage. From there, Eduardo Maceira added a third tally in the 75th minute to move the Bulls in front, 3-0.
Brown broke up the shutout shortly after USF's third goal, when Long converted a header at 75:15 on a feed from freshman James Myall (St. Charles, Ill.) to cut the deficit to 3-1. Seniors Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) and Alex Markes (Valencia, Calif.) both recorded shots in the waning minutes of the contest, but neither attempt reached the back of the net, as the home side held on for the win.
Senior Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) registered three saves in net for the Bears, while Spasoje Stefanovic turned away four shots on the other end. USF outshot Brown, 13-10, in the contest.
Brown continues the USF/FGCU Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20 when the Bears visit Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m.
