FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior goalkeeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) recorded a season-high eight saves in net as the Brown men's soccer team battled Florida Gulf Coast University to a scoreless tie in Saturday evening's non-conference tilt at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Brown moves to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Eagles now stand at 1-3-3 overall.
Florida Gulf Coast outshot the Bears by a 22-11 margin, and put more shots on goal, 8-2, but the Brown keeper turned away every attempt to salvage the tie. Kupstas earned his second shutout of the season after he previously blanked Boston University in the second game of the season.
After an even opening 45 minutes, when the Eagles held a slim 6-5 lead in shots, the home side erupted for a 13-4 shot edge in the second half. Nevertheless, the Eagles could not find the back of the net as the two teams were forced into extra time. Junior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and rookie Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) posted one shot-on-goal apiece during regulation.
FGCU enjoyed the best opportunity in overtime, but Henry Penagos' shot rang off the post early in the first extra frame. After junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) had a shot blocked late in the stanza, the two teams played to a scoreless second overtime period to end at 0-0.
In addition to Akeel and Gorab, sophomore Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) and rookie Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) all posted multiple shots. FGCU won the battle for corner kicks, 8-4.
