HANOVER, N.H. – Freshmen Matt Mahoney (Swampscott, Mass.) and Natalie Schudrowitz (Wauwatosa, Wis.) each posted top-five finishes as the Brown men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2014 season at the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday at the Hanover Country Club.
The men's side finished with 40 points, behind host Dartmouth but ahead of UMass Lowell, while the women's team also finished in second place with 49 points.
"Overall, I was happy with the performances," said Tim Springfield, Director of track & field/cross country. "We had some young athletes really step up--especially Matt Mahoney and Natalie Schudrowitz. Francis Bogan and Megan Ratcliffe had strong openers, too. It was great to see the freshmen out there competing so well."
Mahoney paced the men with a fourth-place finish as he crossed the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24:32.60. Sophomore Tucker Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also posted a top-five finish as he placed fifth in a time of 24:35.30.
Freshman Francis Bogan (Sea Girt, N.J.) placed eighth at 24:56.70, while senior Ben Halpin (Danvers, Mass.) and Chibuikem Nwizu (Greeley, Colo.) placed 13th and 15th, respectively, to round out the top five scorers.
On the women's side, Schudrowitz finished fourth overall as she completed the 6-kilometers course in a time of 21:47.00. Junior Victoria O'Neil (Boise, Idaho) and freshman Megan Ratcliffe placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in times of 22:11.10 and 22:18.10. Senior Abigail Jones (Barrington, R.I.) turned in a 15th-place finish in a time of 22:37.70.
