Cross Lifts Men's Soccer Over Lehigh, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Will Cross (Nashville, Tenn.) scored the game-winning goal with less than 12 minutes left in regulation to break a tie game and lead the Brown men's soccer team past Lehigh, 2-1, in Sunday afternoon's non-conference contest at Stevenson Field.
Brown moves to 2-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 3-2 overall.
In addition to Cross, junior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also scored for the Bears with a goal just 1:07 into the second half. Senior keeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) made seven saves for the Bears to earn the win, while Ciaran Nugent made three stops on the other end for the Mountain Hawks.
After a scoreless first half, when the Mountain Hawks benefited from five corner kicks, including three in the opening 15 minutes, the Bears raced out of the locker room with the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute. Akeel notched his second tally of the season when he fielded a pass from freshman Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) in front of the net and flicked the ball over the reach of Nugent for the lead, 1-0. Senior Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) was also credited with an assist on the play.
Lehigh put the visitors on the board at 75:20 when Jamie Luchini dribbled through traffic down the left flank and hit the far post to even the score at 1-1.
Brown answered back just over three minutes later when Cross scored his first goal of the season at 78:33. Sophomore Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) took the ball down the left side all the way to the goal, but then passed back into the center of the box, where Cross was waiting and blasted a shot under the middle of the crossbar to lift the Bears on top, 2-1.
Lehigh had a final opportunity with 47 seconds left in regulation, but Luchini's shot sailed high over the net as the Bears held on for the win. Brown outshot Lehigh, 11-10, while the visitors won the battle for corner kicks, 9-5.
Brown returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 18 when they visit South Florida at 7:30 p.m.
