
Volleyball Downs CCSU, UMass Lowell to Wrap Up Brown Invite

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown volleyball team claimed a pair of matches, defeating Central Connecticut State, 3-1, and UMass Lowell, 3-0, to close out play at the Brown Invitational Saturday at the Pizzitola Center.
Brown improves to 3-5 on the season, while sophomores Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) and Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) were both named to the Brown Invitational All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the three-match event. Set scores against CCSU were 25-17, 20-25, 25-16 and 25-20, while set scores against UMass Lowell were 25-11, 25-14 and 25-22.
In the match against CCSU, Smith and senior Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) recorded 14 kills apiece, while Lucenti and senior Maryl Vanden Bos (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) earned 28 and 22 assists, respectively. Senior Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) led the way with 20 digs.
After the two teams split the first two sets, the Bears used a .414 attack percentage to take the third stanza, 25-16. Brown held a slim one-point lead at 12-11, but then rattled off a 9-1 run to pave the way for the win to move out in front, 2-1.
Brown fell behind in the fourth set, 10-8, but then registered four unanswered points for the two-point advantage. Central Connecticut came back to even the score at 18 points apiece, but the home side closed it out with a 7-2 stretch to claim the match at 3-1.
In the match against UMass Lowell, freshman Casey Tierney (San Jose, Calif.) paced all players with 13 kills. Lucenti and Conner added 24 assists and 17 digs, respectively. Brown held the River Hawks to a .102 attack percentage.
Brown controlled the opening two sets, hitting .414 in the first stanza for the convincing win at 25-11. After taking the second set, the River Hawks made it interesting in the third and final frame with a 20-18 lead. Nevertheless, the Bears responded with three straight points, and then closed it out with consecutive kills by Tierney to seal the sweep and pick up the second win of the day.
Brown returns to action next weekend at the UNH Holy Young Invitational in Durham, New Hampshire. The Bears open against the host Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
