PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's water polo team split both contests in day one action of the 2014 Bruno Fall Classic at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. In the tournament's opening match, the Bears defeated Cal Baptist by a score of 14-11 before dropping their first game of the season to Santa Clara by a 12-7 decision.
In game one, hat tricks from Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) and Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) powered Brown past Cal Baptist. A pair of goals each from Matty Gallas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) also helped thwart a Lancers comeback bid. With the Bears holding a 12-11 lead late, markers from Wyatt and Deaver salted the game away.
In game two, Deaver added two more goals, his fourth and fifth tallies of the afternoon but it wasn't enough in a 12-7 loss to Santa Clara. Rico Burke's (San Mateo, Calif.) goal brought the Bears within two at 8-6, but a 4-1 Broncos scoring advantage in the final quarter extended the lead that would not be relinquished.
The Bears return to action tomorrow for day two of the Bruno Fall Classic with matches against UC-Irvine (11:30 a.m.) and Navy (4:30 p.m.). Both games can be seen on BrownBears.TV.
