PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Mikela Waldman scored 1:33 into the second half, but the Brown women's soccer team couldn't overcome an early two-goal deficit as the Yale Bulldogs triumphed, 2-1, at Stevenson Field on Friday night.
The Bears conclude the 2014 campaign at 6-8-3 and 1-4-2 in Ivy play, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-4-4 and 2-1-4 in league play.
Prior to the game, Brown honored its seven seniors playing in their final home game. Mallory Yant (Fenton, Mo.), Jenn Casey (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Chloe Cross (Seattle, Wash.), Kirsten Belinsky (Los Altos, Calif.) Allie Reilly (Lawrenceville, N.J.), Anastasia Gillen (San Clemente, Calif.), and Briel Crespi (Berkley, Mass.) all found themselves in the starting lineup.
Leading scorer Melissa Gavin looked to put the visitors on the board early with three shots in the first six minutes of action, including a strike from the top of the box that rang off the crossbar.
Yale caught the Bears for two quick goals in the span of three minutes as Sarah McCauley struck twice for the Bulldogs in the 23rd and 26th minutes.
The offensive chances were at a premium on a cold, bitter night at Stevenson Field, highlighted by Erin Katz's (Montgomery, Ala.) bid in the 31st minute that was robbed by a highlight save from goalkeeper Elise Wilcox.
The Bears cut the deficit to one at the 1:33 mark of the second half as Waldman's (San Francisco, Calif.) perfectly placed volley off a pass from Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.) found the back of the net. Sophomore back Jaclyn Alois (Andover, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate point on the play.
Belinsky appeared to knot the game in the 78th minute on a slick passing play from Waldman, but the play was ruled offside as the Bears continued to press. A last second corner kick for the Bears went awry as the visitors salted away the 2-1 victory.
Yant made a career high 10 stops to drop to 5-8-3, while Wilcox turned away eight Brown bids to improve her record to 4-2-4.
