BANGOR, Maine – Liz Wood's career high 25 points led the Maine Black Bears to a 58-53 win over the Brown women's basketball team on Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Bears drop to 1-5 overall while Maine improves to 2-3 with the win.
Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) chipped in with 20 points, five steals, and four assists, marking the third time the junior has registered 20-plus points in a game this season.
Freshman Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn) registered her fourth game in double figures, posting 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from long distance. Brown captain Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) added eight points and matched a career high with 10 rebounds.
A defensive struggle in the opening 20 minutes led to each team turning the ball over eight times, while Brown struggled from the field in connecting on only 7-of-26 attempts.
Despite being down by as many as seven early, the Bears regrouped to draw within two points at 24-22 entering the locker room.
A back-and-forth affair early in the second half led to a 36-36 tie with 12:41 to play, preceding a 6-0 run for Brown that gave them their largest lead of the game at six after treys from Bikofsky and White.
With eight minutes to play and the game deadlocked at 44, a 10-2 run from the Black Bears, highlighted by key baskets from Sigi Koizar, Wood, and Anna Heise, gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Five quick points by Alexander drew the Bears within one possession at 54-51 with 47 seconds to play, but Wood's jumper with 20 seconds on the clock sealed it for Maine as Brown suffered its second hard-fought defeat in as many days.
Despite the loss, the Bears had their most successful trip to the charity stripe this season, cashing in 10-of-12 attempts (.833).
Brown returns to action on Wednesday night for an in-state battle at Rhode Island beginning at 7 p.m.
