HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) scored a pair of goals, but Joe Wilson scored the game-winner in overtime to highlight three unanswered tallies for the Raiders, as the Brown men's hockey team fell to sixth-ranked Colgate, 4-3, in Friday night's ECAC matchup at Starr Rink.
Brown moves to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the ECAC, while Colgate improves to 9-3-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in the conference.
In addition to Lorito, senior Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine's, Ontario) registered multiple points with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) made 29 saves in net for the Bears, while Charlie Finn recorded 30 stops for the Raiders to earn the win.
Brown jumped on the board at 4:56 in the opening period when Lorito notched his third tally of the season. After de Concilys flicked the puck into Colgate territory, Nick Lappin chased it down and kept the play alive, fighting along the boards before sending a pass across the ice to the left side. Lorito then took a quick shot from a tough angle, but the puck bounced off the shoulder of Finn and into the back of the net for the early lead, 1-0.
Colgate answered back at 12:58 in the first period when Andrew Black scored from the right circle to even the score, 1-1. Colgate held a 13-8 advantage in shots during the opening stanza.
Brown regained the lead early in the second period, when de Concilys scored at 6:01 for his first tally of the season. The senior scored off the faceoff when he launched a shot from the left side that trickled through Finn to push the Bears back in front, 2-1. Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.) was credited with an assist on the play.
With less than five minutes left in the period, Colgate's Darcy Murphy was whistled for a five-minute major, putting Brown on the power play for the remainder of the stanza. Lorito notched his second goal of the night at 16:17, this time on the power play, when he blasted a shot from the left circle to beat Finn and give the Bears the two-goal advantage, 3-1.
Colgate responded 40 seconds later, however, as Kyle Braun scored a short-handed goal to trim the deficit to one, 3-1, at the second intermission. Brown outshot the Raiders by a 20-11 margin in the second period.
After a Brown penalty early in the third period, Wilson scored a power-play goal at 6:53 to even up the score at 3-3. Colgate killed a penalty late in the third to send the game to overtime, when Wilson used a turnover in the neutral zone to score on a breakaway for the win.
The two teams were even in shots, 33-33.
Brown returns to ECAC action tomorrow when they visit Cornell at 7 p.m. Brown's next home game is on Saturday, November 29 when they host UConn at 4 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men's hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
