NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Brown University equestrian finished fourth – and just four points out of first place – at its only home show of the season at Phoenix Rising Farm in its final competition of the fall season.
The Bears hosted the show in conjunction with Rhode Island College at Phoenix Rising – a facility the two schools rented for the event. Brown fared well on a new group of horses, scoring 31 points as a team and finishing behind Johnson & Wales (35), the University of Rhode Island (33), and Holy Cross (32).
In open flat, freshman Sydney Munro took a fourth-place finish while junior point rider Tess Carter (Tucson, Ariz.) came in fifth. In intermediate flat, point rider and junior captain Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) finished third, sophomore Samantha Spear (Chester Springs, Pa.) also gained a third-place finish, and junior Elena Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.) finished sixth.
In novice flat, freshman point rider Victoria Flagg (Great Falls, Va.) earned a blue ribbon while senior Hannah Estlund (Providence, R.I.) came in second in her class, and senior captain Meg Hassan (Exeter, N.H.) came in sixth.
Making her debut in advanced walk-trot-canter junior Alexa Van Hattum (Grand Rapids, Mich.) garnered a first-place finish. Freshman point rider Anna Seto (Barrington, R.I.) also finished first, senior Leah Loerinc (North Dartmouth, Mass.) took second, and sophomore Chloe Hequet (London, England) gained fourth in her class.
In walk-trot, junior point rider Noel Park (Baton Rouge, La.) won a blue ribbon while senior Caryn Cobb (Norfolk, Va.) came in third.
For open fences, junior Sophia Cohen (Greenwich, Conn.) came in fourth while in the same class Carter did not pin. Flagg, the point rider, finished fifth. In intermediate fences, Spear came in fourth, Buchsbaum, the point rider, finished fifth, and senior Hailey Roumimper (Scotts Valley, Calif.) took fourth.
In novice fences, Estlund gained fourth, junior Adele Ruppert (Kings Park, N.Y.) came in sixth, and Berg, the point rider, did not place.
Brown and RIC officials made the decision to switch the order of the day, starting with the flat events indoors before moving to the outdoor ring in the afternoon for fences due to weather and ground conditions.
Next, Brown returns to action in the spring at the University of Rhode Island Show on March 7.
