Women's Soccer Grinds Out 2-2 Draw With Columbia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Goals by Erin Katz and Chloe Cross helped the Brown women's soccer team draw even with Columbia, 2-2, on a rainy Saturday at Stevenson Field. The Bears, unbeaten in their last three outings, improve to 4-4-2 and 0-0-2 in Ivy play while the Lions draw for the fourth time this season, improving to 5-1-4, 1-0-1 in Ivy play.
Senior goalkeeper Mallory Yant (Fenton, Mo.) made three stops for the Bears while Grace Redmon made six saves to improve to 2-0-2.
For the second time in as many games, Brown jumped on the board early as Annie Gillen (San Clemente, Calif.) centered a pass from the right side that was one-timed by Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) into the net for the junior's third goal of the season. As the rain began to fall on Stevenson Field, the teams buckled down on defense and went into half with the score still at 1-0.
The Lions, unbeaten in their last eight games, knotted the score in the 52nd minute on Coleen Rizzo's header off a cross from Natalie Ambrose. With the teams battling through the slippery track, Grace Taylor's shot inside the left post gave the Lions a 2-1 edge with just under 14 minutes left to play.
Brown, seeking the all-important equalizer, cashed in to the tie the game with just 7:17 to play. Cross (Seattle, Wash.) collected a failed clear, spun on her defender, and sent what appeared to be a hard knuckleball towards the goal that fooled Redmon and knotted the game at two. The goal was the senior captain's fifth marker of the season, putting her in a two-way tie with Cornell's Elizabeth Crowell for the Ivy League lead.
Columbia outshot Brown 3-2 over two overtime sessions, but the Bears boasted the best opportunity of extra time when Gillen's strike in the 99th minute slipped through the hands of Redmon, trickling towards the goal line before the goalkeeper corralled it. Bids from the Lions' Elly McGuffog and Torie Goode went astray in the final moments as the teams battled to the draw.
Brown returns to action on Tuesday night at Stevenson Field for a non-conference battle against Quinnipiac beginning at 7 p.m.
