Women's Soccer and Marist Battle to 1-1 Deadlock
10/13/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Chloe Cross put the Brown women's soccer team up early, but a late Marist tally drew the Red Foxes even with the Bears in a 1-1 tie at Tenney Stadium on Monday. The Bears improve to 5-5-3 overall while Marist draws for the fourth time this season to improve to 1-7-4.
Makala Foley made five stops, including two in the overtime periods to keep the Bears off the board for the final 90 minutes of play. Mallory Yant (Fenton, Mo.) made one stop to run her record to 4-5-3.
A slow start to the match saw just two combined shots from both teams in the opening 20 minutes of action, until Cross (Seattle, Wash.), the senior captain, put the Bears on the board at the 20:55. Fellow senior Annie Gillen (San Clemente, Calif.) fed a pass to the middle for Cross, who blasted home a shot from 10-yards out to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Cross recorded a season-high eights shot on Monday, including four shots on target while Erin Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) added a pair of shots for the Bears.
In the second half, the teams went on a 25-minute stretch without recording a shot until Mikela Waldman's (San Francisco, Calif.) blast towards the goal was blocked by the Marist defense in the 80th minute.
With Brown seemingly in control for much of the game, the Red Foxes knotted the game in the 86th minute, cashing in on their third corner kick of the game. Camille Bowen sent the corner into the box and with a scrum ensuing, Amanda Garrity cleaned up the loose ball and fired it past Yant to tie the game at one.
Bids by Cross, Katz, and Kirsten Belinsky (Los Altos, Calif.) in overtime were unable to find the back of the net as the all-time series between the two schools was evened up at 1-1-1.
Brown returns home on Saturday night for a pivotal Ivy contest versus Harvard at Stevenson Field beginning at 7 p.m. For tickets, purchase online, call the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walk up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
