PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made 19 saves to record her third career shutout as the Brown field hockey team held back a furious Providence attack to defeat the Friars, 2-0 at Goldberger Family Field on Monday. The Bears record their 10th win in the all-time series and first triumph over the Friars since 2010.
McSweeney, the senior tri-captain, posted her fourth-highest single-game save total and recorded 10-plus saves for the first time in 2014. Providence goalkeeper Deidra Clymer made two saves in the loss to fall to 9-6.
"Shannon and our defense were outstanding today," said Head Coach Jill Reeve. "I'm really proud of our effort, it was a well deserved win against a solid Friars team."
The Friars looked poised to jump out to an early lead after four penalty corners in the opening 11 minutes of action, but McSweeney was up to the task, stoning PC's Henni Tietze twice on back-to-back corner bids. Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.), seeking the school's record-breaking 37th career goal, recorded Brown's first shot on goal at the 23:23 mark as she batted an aerial ball at the net that was stopped by Clymer. O'Donnell finished the day with three shots and an assist.
Despite the 13-4 disadvantage in shots in the opening half, Brown got on the board first with just 50 seconds to play as freshman Katherine Kallergis (Lake Forest, Ill.) shoveled home O'Donnell's pass for her first collegiate goal.
After two more Friars penalty corners 20 minutes into the second half, the Bears counter-attacked, looking for some insurance. Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) deflected a slick pass to a hard charging Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.) and the sophomore left no doubt in slipping it past Clymer to put Brown up 2-0 with just 13 minutes to play. The goal was Torres' fourth of the season while Rogers added her second assist of 2014.
Some of McSweeney's best work came late as she stoned back-to-back bids by Providence sniper, Daniella Bernasconi in the waning minutes. Both Bernasconi and Tietze recorded five shots on goal, while the Friars held a 15-2 overall edge in penalty corners.
Brown returns to action next Saturday as they travel to Princeton to battled the Tigers beginning at 12 p.m.
