Women's Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Bryant, Falls to Columbia This Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming and diving squad continued its strong performances against local opponents on Friday, scoring a convincing 165-76 decision over Bryant at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. On Saturday, the Bears battled league foe Columbia, ultimately falling by a score of 185-113.
The Bears grabbed victories in 12-of-13 events on Friday, including a win in the 200-Yard Medley Relay in the meet's opening event. Emma Wyke, Briana Borgolini, Emma Lamothe, Reia Tong paced Brown to victory in the event with a time of 1:46.35.
Elly Vitek emerged as the lone dual event winner of the day as she scored wins in the 1000-Yard Freestyle (10:30.88) and the 100-Yard Backstroke (1:00.08).
Megan Viohl, Kate Dillione, and Gina Matsumoto added victories to the Bears' ledger in the 200-Yard Freestyle, 50-Yard Freestyle, and 200-Yard Individual Medley, respectively. Viohl clocked in at 1:56.25 while Dillione finished at 23.88, preceding Matsumoto's triumph in the 200-Yard IM with a mark of 2:06.92.
Paige Gilley, an ECAC Swimmer and Diver of the Week selection for the week of January 4, continued her strong performances with a win in the 100-Yard Freestyle (53.49). The Bears boasted top-three finishes in the 100-Yard Butterfly as Leigh Holmes (57.10), Catherine Pittman (59.13), and freshman Alexandra Klatzkin (59.33) claimed the honors.
Rachel Speakman and Molly Gelb paced Brown to victories in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 269.48 and 255.16, respectively.
In Saturday's contest, Borgolini edged the Lions' Jennifer Shahar in the 100-Yard Breaststroke, clocking in with a time of 1:01.85 before Reia Tong tallied a win the 50-Yard Freestyle (23.52). Tong struck again, this time in the 100-Yard Freestyle as she placed first with a mark of 50.76, ahead of teammate Kate Dillione (51.68).
The Bears found success in the 400-Yard Freestyle relay, scoring a resounding win in the event on the strength of performances from Tong, Dillione, Gilley, and Emma Lamothe (3:27.62).
Speakman concluded the meet with a victory in the 1-meter diving event, edging out Columbia's Katie Furr to notch her second 1-meter diving crown of the weekend for the Bears.
Brown returns to action on Saturday as they hit the road to battle the Big Red of Cornell at 12 p.m.
