BURLINGTON, Vt. – A dominant Maine squad posted four first-half goals en route to snapping the Brown field hockey team's two-game win streak with a 6-0 decision in the Catamount Cup at Moulton Winder Field on Sunday. The Bears fall to 2-2 on the season and the Black Bears improve to 3-4 overall.
Senior Avery Burns (Millersville, Md.) and junior goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made the Catamount Classic All-Tournament Team for their performances over two games.
McSweeney made a career-high 24 saves against the rapid-fire Maine offense that plastered the cage with 31 shots. Junior Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, N.J.) made a defensive save to help McSweeney's cause, but the Brown offense sputtered and managed only one shot on goal in the loss.
Maine spread the scoring among three players who each registered a pair of goals. Holly Stewart found the back of the cage twice in the first half, including the Black Bears' opening score just 3:45 after the opening whistle. Marissa Shaw picked up two goals, each on deflections, while Annabelle Hamilton recorded two unassisted tallies.
Brown opens up Ivy League play on Friday, Sep. 20, when the Bears travel to Columbia for a 5 p.m. showdown.
