Providence, RI- Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) lit up for a career-high 26 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Brown women's basketball team to a 70-57 victory during the Brown BEAR Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Dixon was named the MVP of the Brown BEAR Classic and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, and junior Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team as well.

The Bears were led by Dixon's 16 first-half points as the squad shot over 50 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc to gain a 36-13 lead over the Friars at the intermission. Brown's stifling defense held the Friars to just 13 points, the lowest PC has scored in a half all season.

The Friars came out of the half fired up and went on a 13-0 run in the first five minutes of the second half to cut its deficit to just 10 points, 36-26. Sophomore point guard Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) broke the Bears' silence with two free throws at the 15:26 mark to give Brown back its 12-point advantage, and senior co-captain Aileen Daniels followed with a jumper on the right side at 14:06 to push it up to 14.

PC's Symone Robert's drained a three from the corner to cut the Friars deficit back down to 10 with 11:42 on the clock, and knocked in another to bring the squad within eight at the 10:22 mark.

But the Bears responded when junior Lindsay Nickel put in a layup and made the free throw after the PC foul to push the Bears lead back up to 50-34 with 9:09 left in the game.

With 6:54 left in the game, Clarke drained two free throws after a flagrant foul was called on PC's Chandler McCabe to give Brown a 54-36 advantage, and Dixon knocked in a long trey with just under four minutes to go to increase Bruno's lead to 58-41.

Alicia Cropper hit a trey with 56 seconds left to bring the Friars back with 10 of the Bears, but Hannah Passafuim put in four free throws and Daniels sank the last two to take a 70-54 lead with 34 seconds remaining. PC's Chelsea Breslin was able to knock in a three with 25 seconds left on the clock to put the score at 70-57, but that was as close as the Friars would get as the Bears earned their first win over the Friars since the 2002-03 season.

Dixon led all scorers with 26 points and six rebounds, followed by Nickel with 16 points and three rebounds. Clarke added 10 points and three assists and three steals.

Providence was led by Alicia Cropper's 16 points and five rebounds, followed by Teya Wright with 14 points and 17 rebounds.
