
Brown Outworks Rhode Island, Stuns Rams 65-56

Providence, RI – Sophomore guard Sean McGonagill scored 19 points and junior guard Stephen Albrecht added 17 points to lead Brown to a 65-56 upset win over Rhode Island at the Pizzitola Sports Center, beating the Rams for the first time since 2001. The win evens Brown's record at 4-4 on the season, while Rhode Island falls to 1-6.
The player of the game, though, may have been Bears' forward Andrew McCarthy, scored 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field, completed the double-double with 13 rebounds against the much bigger URI front line.
McGonagill's 19 points came on 6 of 14 shooting from the field, while Albrecht 's 17 points came mostly behind the three-point arch, connecting on 5 of 10 treys.
The Rams were led by Jamal Wilson, who netted 18 points.
Trailing 32-30 at the half, Brown out-played the Rams to open the second half and took control of the game by out-scoring URI by a 10-2 margin to pull ahead by a 40-34 margin following a dunk by McCarthy three minutes into the second half.
The Bears pulled ahead by nine points, 50-41, with 11:52 remaining on a trey by freshman Christian Gore.
Rhode Island pulled to within two points, 55-53, with 6:16 left in the game, but the Bears answered immediately with a 5-0 run on two free throws by McGonagill and a trey to Albrecht to put Brown in control once again, 60-53 with 4:31 remaining in the game.
URI opened up a 20-13 lead with 11:46 left in the first half after hitting four of its first six treys. A trey by Brown's Sean McGonagill, a dunk by Andrew McCarthy and a lay-up by Stephen Albrecht evened the score, 20-20, at the 10:20 mark.
The Rams pulled ahead by six points, 29-23, before settling on a 32-30 lead at the half.
The Bears will travel to Iowa City, Iowa to face the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, December 3. Game time is 2:00 p.m. CST at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
