Penn Tops Brown, 55-54, in Controversial Ending
1/30/2010 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Providence, Rhode Island - Junior Dan Monckton's lay-up
off a missed three-point basket was ruled good at the buzzer by the
officials to give Penn a controversial 55-54 win over Brown at the
Pizzitola Sports Center.
The replay viewed later clearly showed the basket came after the
buzzer sounded and the red light on the backboard was lit. In fact,
Monckton had yet to touch the ball when the clock hit 0:00 and the
buzzer sounded. Unfortunately for the Bears, replay was not
available at the scorers' table so the referee's
decision stood.
Brown drops to 7-15 overall, 1-3 in the Ivy League, while Penn goes
to 2-14, 1-1 in league play.
With Brown clinging to a one-point lead, 54-53, the Bears missed a
one-and-one with six seconds remaining. The Quakers hurried the
ball up court and Zack Gordon missed a trey with les than two
seconds left on the clock. The ball hit the rim, then the backboard
and Monckton grabbed the rebound and laid the ball up for the game
winning shot.
Freshman Tucker Halpern led the Bears with 14 points, while senior
Matt Mullery added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Zack Rosen tossed in a game high 19 points for the
Quakers, while senior Jack Eggleston scored 18 points and pulled
down nine rebounds. Monckton finished the game with 11 points.
After leading by three points at the half, 26-22, Brown built a
nine point second half advantage, 44-35, on jump shot by Halpern
with 10:10 left in the game. The Quakers cut the Brown lead to one
point, 48-47, on two free throws by Rosen with 4:41 left to
play.
Brown pulled ahead by five points with 33 seconds remaining, 54-49,
on two Halpern free throws. A lay-up and then two free throws by
Rosen with six seconds left cut the Brown lead to 54-53.
Brown grabbed an early 24-11 lead following a baseline jump shot by
sophomore Marques Coleman with 5:58 left in the first half.
But the Bears were scoreless for the next 5:57 as the Quakers went
on an 11-0 run to trail, 24-22, on a thee-point basket by Conor
Turley with 1:11 left in the half. Senior Matt Mullery scored for
the Bears at the buzzer to give Brown a 26-22 lead at
intermission.
Junior Garrett Leffelman was Brown's third double figure
scorer with six points, while also pulling down six rebounds.
The Bears will be back in action again next Friday and Saturday,
February 5 & 6, at Columbia in New York City, and Cornell in
Ithaca, New York.
