Bears Fall to Fairfield, 2-1
9/29/2009 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
FAIRFIELD, CT - Despite getting outshot, 15-3, during the first 35 minutes, the Brown field hockey team (3-5) held a 1-0 lead at the break, but a pair of second-half goals by the Stags would lift Fairfield (4-6) to a 2-1 victory on over the Bears on Tuesday afternoon.
The Stags dominated the game throughout, earning a 29-11 advantage in shots, while forcing sophomore Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) to make 17 saves, a career-high. Despite the sluggish start, the Bears would grab a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when junior Tacy Zysk (Walpole, MA) converted a pass from freshman Kelley Harrison (Houston, TX) on Brown's third shot of the game.
Trailing, 1-0, to start the second half, Fairfield wasted little time in tying the game, as Molly Byrnes deflected a pass from Melanie Leo just 1:48 after the break. Fairfield continued to press up front and create opportunities, and tallied the game-winner in the 52nd minute when Jill Piacquadio connected on another redirection of a Leo pass.
The Stags also dominated in corner opportunities, earning 17 to Brown's six. Two Fairfield goalies combined to record eight saves.
Brown continues action this weekend with a pair of games, at Harvard on Saturday at noon and then at home against Vermont on Sunday at 2:00.
