PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior Joyce Chun (Irvine, CA) scored her first
career goal with just 3:42 remaining in the game to lift the Brown
women's soccer team (2-4-0) to a 1-0 victory over Army (4-4-1) on
Thursday evening at Stevenson Field, as the Bears earned their
second straight shutout.
With time ticking down on the clock and the chances of overtime
becoming more likely, the Bears broke the scoreless tie on what
would be the final shot of the game. Having just come back into the
game at 85:41, sophomore Sarah Hebert-Seropian (Vaudreuil-Dorion,
QUE) intercepted the ball on the left wing just over the Bears'
side of the midfield. She dished the ball off to sophomore Marybeth Lesbirel (Holmdel, NJ), who crossed it over to Chun, racing down
the right sideline. Chun drew her defender and unleashed a shot
that beat Army's Alex Lostetter to her right for the
game-winner.
The two teams battled evenly for most of the game, as both Brown
and Army generated many scoring chances. Both Brown senior Brenna Hogue (Concord, CA) and Lostetter were up to the task, stopping
shot-after-shot to keep the game scoreless through 86 minutes of
action.
Army's best chance of the game came with 16:35 left in the first
half on one of the Black Knights four first-half corner kicks.
After the initial attempt was cleared by the Brown defense, the
ball came back out to Elizabeth Betterbed on the right side. With
Hogue on the left post, Betterbed fired a rocket to the far corner,
but junior Sylvia Stone (Bronx, NY) blocked the shot on the goal
line to keep the game scoreless.
After the first 45 minutes, Brown led in both shots (10-7) and
corners (5-4), but Army was more efficient, taking five shots on
goal, to Brown's three. The second half was more decidedly Brown,
as the Bears outshot Army, 14-9 (7-4 on goal), and earned four
corner kicks to Army's one.
Both Hogue and Lostetter recorded nine saves, as Hogue earned her
ninth career shutout. The Bears return to action on Sunday,
September 27, when they host Dartmouth in their 2009 Ivy opener at
1:00.
