Mosquera's Five Points Lead Bears Past Sacred Heart, 3-2
9/23/2009 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Elara Mosquera (North Hampton, NH)
scored two goals and assisted a third to lead the Brown field
hockey team (3-3) to a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart (1-8) on
Wednesday afternoon at Warner Roof.
The Bears dominated the first 35 minutes, outshooting the Pioneers,
12-1, while not allowing a shot from the visitors until the 23rd
minute. However, at the other end of the field, Sacred Heart's Kim
Stow stopped everything that came her way until 32:32 when Mosquera
tallied her first career goal on a Bears' penalty corner. Junior
Katie Hyland (Riegelsville, PA) earned an assist on the goal, as
Brown led, 1-0, at the break.
Sacred Heart picked up the intensity in the second half, holding a
7-5 advantage in shots at one point. However, senior Michaela Seigo
(Annandale, VA) doubled the Bears lead 11 minutes after halftime
with her first of the season. After a broken play on another Brown
corner, Mosquera came up with the ball and dished it to Seigo on
her right. Seigo dribbled in and lifted the ball over Stow's head
and into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead at 46:21.
Less than four minutes later, at 50:17, Lindsay Kasten got the
Pioneers on the board, tipping a shot by Dana Luhrs on a Sacred
Heart corner.
After the goal, play picked up on both sides, as Sacred Heart
pressed for the equalizer and Brown looked to build upon its lead.
After a Pioneers' timeout in the 60th minute, Mosquera collected a
lose ball on the Sacred Heart restart and dribbled through the
defense, before firing a shot that beat Stow to her right.
Mosquera's goal would prove to be the game-winner, as Stephanie
Fazio tallied an unassisted marker with just 47 seconds remaining
for the 3-2 final.
For the game, Brown held a 20-12 advantage in shots and a 6-5
advantage in corners. Stow finished with 11 saves for the Pioneers,
while sophomore Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) recorded three
saves for Brown, all in the second half.
The Bears continue action on Saturday afternoon, September 26, when
they host Dartmouth in a 12:00 noon Ivy League contest.
