Masini & Zysk Lead Bears to First Win of Season, 4-2 Over Monmouth
9/12/2009 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Kit Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) and junior
Tacy Zysk (Walpole, MA) stretched their point-scoring streaks to
three games, with five and three points, respectively, in leading
the Bears to their first win of the season, 4-2 over Monmouth
(3-2). Brown (1-2) fought back from a one-goal deficit on two
occasions to earn the win, as junior Katie Hyland (Riegelsville,
PA) also scored in the victory.
Brown controlled the game from the outset, outshooting the Hawks
by a 26-16 margin. However, it was Monmouth that would score the
first goal, as an unmarked Enza Mazza picked up the ball after it
had deflected off the stick of a Brown defender and beat sophomore
Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) with a shot to the right corner
just 12:26 into the game.
The Bears needed less than two minutes to tie the score, as Zysk
assisted Masini for her first goal of the game at 14:17. From the
right side of the field, Zysk passed to Masini on the left post and
she tipped the ball to the near corner, tying the game at 1-1,
which is how the score remained through the end of the first
half.
Monmouth regained the one-goal lead just 2:54 after halftime when
Mazza assisted a goal by Meredith Violi. After the initial shot on
a Hawks' corner was blocked by the Brown defense, the rebound
popped out to Mazza, who passed to Violi on the left post. Violi
shot the ball past Washburn, beating the Brown keeper to the right
corner.
However, the Bears quickly responded to tie the game at 2-2. After
two failed corner attempts in a row for Brown, Zysk scored a
beautiful backhander from just outside the goal. Despite being
marked tightly by her defender, Masini was able to dish the ball to
Zysk, who promptly back-handed the ball past Melissa Katz, just
4:34 after Monmouth's second goal.
Zysk's goal seemed to re-energize the Bears and after a quick
Monmouth possession and a timeout by Brown, Hyland put the Bears up
for good with her first goal of the season. After Katz saved three
consecutive shots by the Bears, including two by sophomore Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ), Brown earned another penalty corner.
Hyland scored on a direct shot from the top of the circle with
assists going to Springmeyer and senior Michaela Seigo (Annandale,
VA) at 50:36.
With just under 10 minutes left to play, Masini scored her second
of the game, converting a beautiful cross from Springmeyer,
accounting for the 4-2 final.
For the game, Monmouth held a slight, 8-7, advantage in penalty
corners. Washburn finished with five saves on the afternoon, while
Katz made 11 saves for Monmouth.
The Bears have a quick turnaround between games and return to
action tomorrow afternoon when they host Bryant in a 2:00 p.m.
contest.
