The Brown men's water polo team (3-1) cruised to a 20-14 victory over Iona College on Friday night during the first game of the Princeton Invitational. Freshman Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia), the CWPA's Northern Division Rookie of the Week, led the offensive attack with six goals, while senior Zach Levko (Wildwood, MO) and junior Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) put in four apiece.
“While it was nice to see our offense come to life after last week, I was not happy it was at the expense of our defense,” said Head Coach Felix Mercado. “We can't expect to win games when we give up 14 goals.”
Brown jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter, and went into halftime holding an 8-6 advantage over the Gaels. Bruno's offense kept the pressure up, scoring five more goals in the third and seven in the fourth to earn a 20-14 win.
Besides Stefanovic's six goals, he also added two assists, as did Levko and Hood. Freshman Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL) recorded two goals on the night and handed out one assist and three ejections drawn. In net, senior captain Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) tallied three saves in the first half of play, while sophomore Max Lubin (Beverly Hills, CA) earned three saves in the second half.
Sophomore Marcus Gartner (San Jose, CA), junior Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA), junior Brandon Yoshimura (Haverford, PA) and freshman Cyrus Mojdehi (La Jolla, CA) also contributed to the big win, as they all added one goal in the offensive explosion by the Bears.
