Springmeyer's Two Goals Lead Bears to 3-2 Victory over Vermont in Penalty Strokes
10/4/2009 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ)
tallied a pair of goals in regulation and the Bears went on to
outscore Vermont (1-11), 4-1, in penalty strokes, as the Brown
field hockey team (4-6) earned a 3-2 victory over Vermont on Sunday
afternoon at Warner Roof. Brown outscored Vermont, 4-1, in penalty
strokes, as sophomore Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD), junior Katie Hyland (Riegelsville, PA), junior Cassie Puhalla (Forty Fort, PA),
and junior Tacy Zysk (Walpole, MA) all scored and sophomore
Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) stopped two Vermont attempts
with a third going wide.
Despite getting outshot, 25-18, for the game, the Bears had the
better of the play for the majority of the afternoon, earning 14
corners to Vermont's eight. Just 4:08 into the game, Springmeyer's
first of the day gave Brown a 1-0 lead, on the Bears' second corner
of the afternoon. After inserting the ball up to senior Michaela Seigo (Annandale, VA), Springmeyer came to the left post, where she
received a pass from Hyland, before one-timing the ball to the far
side for the 1-0 lead.
With both teams playing their second game in as many days, the goal
seemed to energize the Catamounts, who received an immediate lift
after Allison Barnaby came into the game in the 21st minute. Just
3:42 after entering the game, Barnaby tied the score at 1-1, when
she converted a pass from Mackenzie Williams for her first goal of
the season.
Exactly one minute later, Barnaby made the score 2-1 in favor of
Vermont, when she tipped a shot by Holly Davis up and past
Washburn, blocker side.
Both teams had chances early in the second half, with Vermont
looking to increase its lead and the Bears looking for the
equalizer. Springmeyer forced the tie at the 51:40 mark, scoring on
a play almost identical to her first goal, but this time on a pass
from senior Whitney Knowlton (Columbus, OH).
Following the goal, Vermont again picked up its intensity,
outshooting Brown, 4-0, over the next 10 minutes. However, a
timeout by the Bears with just over 10 minutes left to play favored
the home team, as Brown closed out the game with a 4-1 advantage in
shots. The Bears had a great chance to win the game in regulation
with three corners in the final 24 seconds, including two with no
time left on the clock. However, Vermont's Kristen Heavens made a
save and the Catamounts' defense blocked another shot, as the teams
headed for overtime, Brown's second straight overtime contest.
Vermont outshot Brown, 8-5, in the two overtime periods, however,
the Bears may have had the best chance, as Springmeyer's shot from
the right side on a semi-breakaway sailed just wide of the net
about 10 minutes into the first overtime.
Heavens finished the overtime with two saves, both in the first
15-minute period, while Washburn made three overtime saves for the
Bears, including two in the second 15-minute overtime, as the teams
headed into penalty strokes.
For the game, Washburn finished with 10 saves, while Heavens made
seven for Vermont. The Bears continue action on Sunday, October 11,
when they travel to Maine for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
