PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior Michaela Seigo (Annandale, VA) and junior Katie Hyland (Riegelsville, PA) each tallied a goal and an assist, but it wasn't enough, as Providence College (6-9) earned a 3-2 victory over the Brown field hockey team (4-9) on Tuesday evening at PC.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 12:48 mark as Nellie Poulin tipped in a goal off an initial shot taken by Adrienne Marois. The Bears responded 10 minutes later, at 22:51, when Hyland scored on a direct corner, as Seigo and sophomore Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) both earned an assist on the goal.
However, Kelly Grogan would give PC a 2-1 lead before halftime, scoring off a pass from Jaime Lipski at 30:05. Ashlyn Hudson then increased the Friars' lead to 3-1 just 4:25 into the second half when she converted a pass from Nicole Fernandez for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Seigo brought the Bears to within one, scoring off a pass from Hyland in the 65th minute, but Brown was unable to force a tie in the closing minutes.
For the game, Providence held a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) recorded 10 saves. Brown returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell at 1:00 p.m.
