In the long annals of Brown sailing, there are few if any who can match the breadth and scope of Sarah “Pease” Herndon Glaser’s ’83 accomplishments. Her sailing career includes competing at the highest level in multiple types of boats in different class categories on a world stage over a period of a quarter century.
Glaser sailed in both coed and women’s races at Brown. As a sophomore, she placed third as an individual and fifth as a team at the College Sailing Women’s National Championship. The following season, Glaser was named New England Women’s Sailor of the Year. She sailed A Division Coed the entire 1982 and 1983 season. In her senior year, Glaser finished third at the New England Dinghy Championships and ranked sixth in the world in dinghy competition.
Following her stellar career at Brown, Glaser competed for the U.S. Olympic Class Sailing Team. From 1985-88, she placed second at the 470 Women’s World Championships and won the Shiseido International Regatta (470) twice with the team. The squad captured the Silver Medal (Women’s 470) at the Goodwill Games (1986).
In 1996, she was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team (tuning partner) where they placed fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials - Tornado. From 1989-97, Glaser was a three-time North American Champion and U.S. National Champion with the Tornado (helm).
From 1998-2000 with the Women’s 470 (crew), Glaser won the U.S. Olympic Trials, placed seventh twice at the 470 Championships and had two sixth place finished at the World Championships and Open World Championships. Glaser earned a Silver Medal with the Women’s 470 (crew) team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Outside of her success with the U.S team, Glaser was a three-time U.S. Women’s Doublehanded Champion (helm). She competed in a multitude of boats which included Multihull, Keelboat and Match Racing.
Over her career, Glaser received the Peggy Slater Memorial Trophy, the Yachtswoman Excellence Award, the Andy Graham Olympic Trophy, and has been named Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year.
