Sara Deidrick Timms
- Induction:
- 1982
- Class:
- 1976
Sara Deidrick Timms '76 came to Brown with no intention of playing varsity basketball. That's because Brown, at that time, didn't have a women's basketball program. That problem was taken care of in her sophomore year and by the time Miss Deidrick graduated she owned nine women's basketball scoring records and shared two others. She was one of the most outstanding athletes ever to attend Holland Hall School and St. John's School, both in Houston. She was an All-Conference for three years in basketball and captained the round ball team in her senior season. She was also All-Conference in field hockey, softball, and tennis. In fact, softball was close to second in Miss Deidrick's life. While attending college, she spend her summer vacations playing softball with the Tulsa Dixiebelles, who made it to the Nationals, and the J.H. Rose Laurels in Houston. Women's basketball started at Brown during Sara Deidrick's sophomore season. It was a successful debut, both for the team and for Sara. The Bruins posted a 13-1 record and Miss Deidrick led the club in scoring with a 13.4 per game average. Brown was 16-4 in 1974-75, placing first in the NIT tournament and second in the Ivy tourney. A 13-7 senior season gave Brown a 42-12 record for the three years in which Sara competed. Her records included most points scored game, season, and career, highest scoring average season and career, most field goals season and career, and best field goal percentage career (42 percent). Although she was known basically as a scorer, the quickness and jumping ability of Brown's 5-4 guard enabled her to become a fine rebounder. At that time, Coach Carole Kleinfelder said: "Sara is the most talented and un-selfish player on the team. She leads by example and probably could start for any college team in the country." Sara Deidrick now lives in Providence.
