Patrick Weir was a key ingredient in the success of the Brown men’s soccer program during the late 1970’s. he was a four-year starter at sweeper, and the fact that he earned a starting spot as a freshman was extremely impressive. Although they struggled his senior year, the Bears went to three NCAA Tournaments in Weir’s four years and compiled a 36-23-4 record in that time. He was a key member of the 1977 team that went on to the Final Four before losing to Hartwick in the NCAA semi-finals.
As a freshman, Weir helped lead Brown to its fourth consecutive Ivy League Championship, finishing in the Ivy League with a perfect 7-0 record, and the season with an 11-3-1 overall record. It was only the fourth time in the history of Brown men’s soccer that a team has swept through the Ivy League schedule unblemished.
During Patrick’s sophomore season, the Bears earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the 10th consecutive year, this time reaching the Final Four. The Bears finished with a second pace Ivy finish and an 11-6-2 overall record.
The 1978 team also went on to the NCAA’s under Weir’s leadership, finishing in second place in the Ivy League with a 5-2 record, and a 9-5-1 overall record.
As a senior, Patrick was named an All-American performer, along with earning All-Ivy and All-New England honors. He finished his career on College Hill a three-time All-Ivy performer and a four-time All-New England performer. He was elected captain of the team for both his junior and senior seasons and was named team MVP in 1978 and 1979.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Patrick now resides in Florissant, Missouri with his wife, Patricia, and their two children, Erin (16), and Tim (13). The engineering concentrator is now a supervising engineer at Sioux Power Plant Amerenue Corporation.
