Kristina Farrar Stookey
- Induction:
- 2016
- Class:
- 1991
A four-time All-American at Brown and a 1996 Olympian, Kristina Farrar Stookey ’91 led Brown to its only Fowle Trophy — given to the best overall team in collegiate sailing — in program history in 1991.
Stookey competed for the U.S. Sailing Team from 1990-96 in the Women’s 470 Class and helped Brown become the first Ivy League school to win the Fowle Trophy.
After representing the U.S. in the World Junior Championships in Hungary in the summer before her freshman year at Brown, Stookey earned a first-place finish in the B-Division at the Freshman Atlantic Coast Championship with fellow Brown Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Hall ’92.
In the spring of 1988, Stookey placed first in the A-Division at the Women’s National Championship and earned honors as a Women’s All-American Skipper. Because of her talent level, Brown head coach Brad Dellenbaugh then made the decision to move Stookey from women’s to coed sailing, and she competed in the coed B-Division for her final three seasons.
Stookey earned All-American Coed Skipper accolades in each of her last three seasons at the Coed National Championship. She finished second at the 1991 championship as the Bears gained the Fowle Trophy.
Continuing to sail after her time on College Hill, Stookey competed in the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, placing second in the Women’s 470 Class and coming just one place shy of a berth in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Stookey went on to compete in the 1994 Pan American Games and at multiple world championships.
In 1996, she came in first place at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the Women’s 470 Class, earning a spot on Team USA for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. In Atlanta, she raced in a series of 11 races and finished in fourth place in the Women’s 470 Class, marking the third-best finish in U.S. Sailing history in the 470 Class at the Olympics.
A 2012 inductee into the Kent School Athletic Hall of Fame in soccer and sailing, Stookey served as a captain at Kent where she twice earned Best Skipper of the Year honors and competed at the national championships in Annapolis, Md.
