One of Brown men’s basketball’s three Ivy League Players of the Year, Jason Forte ’05 helped lead the Bears to one of their most successful four-year runs in program history.
Forte propelled Brown to tie the school record with 17 wins during both the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons while pushing the Bears to a program-record 12 Ivy League wins in 2002-03. Brown became the first Ivy team besides Penn or Princeton to notch 12 or more league wins in a season in 35 years. Forte helped Brown make its first-ever appearance in the National Invitation Tournament in 2003.
The 2004 Ivy League Player of the Year, Forte became the second recorded player in Ivy League history to post a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists against Dartmouth on February 27, 2004. In 2003-04, he became the first player in league history to lead the conference in both scoring (21.4 points per game) and assists (5.79 assists per game) in league games.
Forte gained access into an elite fraternity in Brown basketball as both an Ivy League Player of the Year and a three-time First Team All-Ivy selection. A First Team All-Ivy pick in 2003, 2004, and 2005, Forte joined Mike Cingiser ’62 and Earl Hunt ’03 as the only other Bears to accomplish the feat. In 2004 and 2005, Forte won Brown’s J. Richmond Fales Trophy twice, given to the team’s most valuable player. He also earned the Jim Turner ’86 Award in 2003, presented to the player who, through hard work and dedication, has improved the most. Forte gained Brown’s First-Year Male Athlete Award in 2002.
In 2006, Forte garnered a spot on the 15-member Brown Basketball 100th Anniversary Team. As the lone four-year player in the Bears’ Class of 2005, his 60 career wins stand second only to the Brown Class of 2004’s 63 career wins. Forte led the Ivy League in scoring in league games in both 2003-04 (21.4 points per game) and in 2004-05 (19.3). He stands fourth in the Ivy record book in career free throws (538) and seventh in career steals (192).
On Brown’s career lists, Forte ranks first in steals (192), second in free throws (538), third in assists (514), fourth in points (1,597), and 10th in field goals (469). In the Bears’ single-season charts, his top marks include a second-place spot in assists (155 in 2002-03) and a fifth-place spot in free throws (165 in 2004-05).
