James D. Munro

A 1989 All-American selection, James Munro ’89 earned myriad honors as a senior captain, including First Team All-Ivy and Team Offensive MVP. He also competed in the North/South All-Star Game and the New England East/West Game, earning MVP honors in the latter contest.
Munro concluded his career with 152 points, standing fifth in the Brown record book at the time of his graduation (currently 14th). In addition to his impressive senior season, Munro also was tabbed All-Ivy Honorable Mention in 1987 and 1988.
After Brown, Munro played professionally for the Boston Blazers of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL) in 1993-94 and was voted All-Club in 1993 and Club All-Star in 1994. Munro was later an assistant coach for Major League Lacrosse’s (MLL) Boston Cannons.
Munro began his collegiate coaching career at Colorado College as an assistant in 1990, where the Tigers went 14-2 and won the Rocky Mountain Championship.
The following year, Munro returned to the Ivy League to become the head assistant coach at Yale in 1991, a position he held through the 1998 season. With the Bulldogs, Munro guided the program to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals in 1992 and led the team to five Top-20 national rankings. In 1996, Munro was honored with the “Jay Gallagher” Award for the assistant coach of the year by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
Munro proceeded to become the University of Denver’s coach in their first Division I season (1999). He led the Pioneers to the NCAA tournament in 2006 and 2008. In his 10 years at Denver, Munro composed a 90-70 record and led the team to four Great Western Lacrosse League Championships (2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008). Munro also was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2006.
After his coaching career, Munro spent time as a color analyst for international and collegiate lacrosse coverage on ESPNU.
