Paul L. Maddock ’33 Award - Special honor given to an individual who has gone to the extreme supporting Brown athletics.
As a Brown freshman, Dave “Chi” Chichester played three sports - soccer, basketball, and baseball- but soccer was his passion. In his four seasons in legendary coach Cliff Stevenson’s program, he included serving as a goalkeeper and co-captain of the 1966 Ivy championship team, Brown’s fourth consecutive title. His long-term dedication to Brown Men’s Soccer continues today, with Chi serving as the Men’s Soccer Association Chairperson. Coach Chase Wileman has quickly observed Chi’s impact on the program, citing his “unwavering generosity, support, and love of Brown. You can see his outward devotion from his philanthropy and help to build infrastructure… However, what may go unnoticed is his intimate presence with the athletic teams directly - consistently attending games and training sessions, advising student-athletes, coordinating alumni events, and his friendship with coaches.” Chi created the Britton Chichester Award for Men’s Soccer in 2001, which is given annually in honor of his son, who died in his senior year of high school.
After graduation, Chi served as a Navy Lieutenant in Vietnam and earned an MBA at Harvard Business School. Throughout his long and successful business career, Chi always made room for Brown regardless of where he lived. He has led his Class, serving as President and Class Marshall at his 50th Reunion. He has worked tirelessly as a fundraiser and Director of the Class Officers Board. Chi was recognized for his many commitments to the University, receiving the Alumni Service Award in 1996 after serving as Governor of the Alumni Association (1995-97). Forty years of alumni school interviewing and heading up Brown Clubs in Chicago and Maryland also speak to Chi’s constant devotion to Brown, as does his Brown Veterans Alumni Council membership.
In addition to all of the above, Dave Chichester has been deeply involved with the Brown Sports Foundation, serving as Director (1995—present), Vice President (2008 - 2016), and, since 2017, Co-President with Marcia Hooper ’77, who received the Maddock Award in 2022. Their leadership has dramatically enhanced all Brown sports. Concurrently, Chi was a member of the President’s Athletic Advisory Council on Athletics (2016 -2023).
Despite his lifetime of significant contributions to Brown, Chi often flies quietly under the radar, never seeking the spotlight. As Marcia Hooper notes, “ If you want something done, done well, and done humbly, ask Chi. You won’t be disappointed.” Dave Chichester epitomizes the cherished Brown concept of Ever True. He embodies the Paul L. Maddock ‘33 Award criterion: “ an individual who has gone to the extreme in support of Brown athletics.”
Chi and his wife, Hilde, live on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
