- 2001
A two-time First Team All-Ivy selection, Dan Kantrovitz ’01 left College Hill with his name entrenched in the Brown baseball record book as one of the premier hitters in program history.
Kantrovitz wrapped up his four-year career with 208 career hits, which currently ranks tied for third all-time and was tied for first at the time of graduation, and is eighth all-time in the Ivy League. He also ranks sixth in doubles (47) and games played (174) at Brown, ninth in total bases (293) and 10th in RBIs (111) and runs scored (127).
Kantrovitz’s best season came as a sophomore in 1999, when the standout shortstop paced the Ivy League with 32 hits and 10 doubles in league contests. He went 32-for-67 at the plate (.478) to win the coveted Blair Bat Award for the league’s best batting average, one of only four Brown players to ever win the award. His sophomore season was highlighted by a 24-game hitting streak, a single season record at Brown, en route to First Team All-Ivy honors.
He also earned First Team accolades as a senior in 2001, when he paced the league with 22 RBIs. A devoted student-athlete, Kantrovitz was the recipient of Brown’s Cliff Stevenson Award, presented to the senior male varsity athlete who best exemplifies boundless enthusiasm, indomitable spirit and devotion to the quality of life at Brown and the surrounding community.
After graduating from Brown with a concentration in organizational behavior and management, Kantrovitz was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2001 MLB Draft. A shoulder injury limited his time in the minors and, following a stint in business, Kantrovitz moved back into baseball and was hired as an assistant in the Cardinals’ scouting department. After just four years he became the Assistant Scouting Director and the Director of College Scouting, a position he held from 2004-08 before receiving a master’s degree in statistics from Harvard in 2009.
After two years with the Oakland A’s as the Director of International Scouting, Kantrovitz returned to the Cardinals as the Director of Scouting in 2012. In November 2014, Kantrovitz returned to the Oakland A’s as the Assistant General Manager.
