Phil DeCapito joined the Brown coaching staff in 2024 and serves as the Bears’ Defensive Line Coach.
In his second season on staff in 2025, DeCapito's defensive front helped the Bears rank second in the Ivy League with 21.0 sacks in 10 games, the most by Brown since the 2017 season, and Brown allowed the fewest points per game since 2016. Defensive end Ike Odimegwu ranked second in the Ivy League in sacks, and 16th in FCS in sacks per game. Through his first two seasons, three Bears defensive linemen have earned All-Ivy honors.
DeCapito joined the Bears staff after previously serving as a Defensive Quality Control Assistant at the University of Pittsburgh, working with the nickels and safeties. In his five seasons with the Panthers (2019-23), DeCapito’s teams led the nation in combined quarterback sacks with 230 and finished in the top 12 in the nation in rushing defense four times.
DeCapito previously served as a graduate assistant on Pat Narduzzi’s staff at Pitt from 2015-17 and followed that up with stops at Memphis in 2018 where the Tigers were the AAC runners-up, and as the defensive coordinator at Division II Lake Erie College in Ohio, before ultimately reuniting with Narduzzi at Pitt.
Throughout his career, DeCapito has coached five future NFL Draft picks, and four more players who signed as undrafted free agents.
A native or Warren, Ohio, DeCapito earned First Team All-Trumbull County honors as a lineman at John F. Kennedy Catholic School and was also a member of the school’s wrestling team. He was a four-year member of the football team at Emory & Henry College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education and physical education.
