Cory Gibbs '01, a former Brown men's soccer player and currentdefender on the New England Revolution, has recently joined theBrown soccer staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
Gibbs had tremendous success while playing for Brown from1997-2000. During his tenure, he led the Bears to four straightNCAA Tournament appearances, including the Elite Eight his senioryear in 2000. The 2000 Ivy League Player of the Year, Gibbs guidedBrown to a perfect 7-0-0 record in the Ivy League that year.
Since graduating from Brown, Gibbs has gone on to even greatersuccess on the soccer field. He was added to the U.S. NationalMen's Soccer Team roster in January of 2003 and signed a contractwith the Dallas Burn of the MLS in February of 2004 after threeyears with St. Pauli of the regional Bundesliga. A year later,Gibbs signed a four and a half year contract with the eliteFeyenoord Rotterdam, becoming just the third active American in theDutch Premier League.
In May of 2006, Gibbs inked a deal with Charlton of the F.A.Premier League a few days after being selected to the 2006 U.S.FIFA World Cup roster. Unfortunately for Gibbs, an injury sufferedduring a match against Morocco later that month, sidelined him fromthe World Cup. In May 2008, it was announced that he would leaveCharlton on June 30, at the end of his contract. He never played agame for Charlton due to injuries.
Up until his injury, Gibbs had racked up 19 caps for the U.S.National Team. Gibbs saw action in seven matches in his inauguralcampaign in 2003, including three starts in the Gold Cup and two inFrance. He played all 90 minutes in the World Cup Qualifier againstGuatemala on March 30, 2005, helping lead the U.S. to a 2-0 shutoutvictory.
Gibbs was acquired by the Colorado Rapids in August of 2008, andwas immediately part of the starting lineup. He battled back frominjuries in 2006-07 to earn the 2008 Rapids' Defender of the Yearhonors. He made his Rapids debut playing 90 minutes on 8/16 vs.Kansas City and then appeared in nine games with nine starts andtallied his first career MLS goal, which was also an MLS Goal ofthe Week nominee, against LA on Oct. 12. In 2009, he started in 19of 20 games playing 1,575 minutes.
Gibbs was then acquired by the New England Revolution prior tothe start of the 2010 season to provide a veteran presence to theRevs' back line. He has started in all 25 games this seasonplaying 2,179 minutes.
