Patrick Murphy is in his first season at Brown in 2025 as the Assistant Coach, Tights Ends/Special Teams Coordinator. A familiar name in Rhode Island and New England with prior head coaching experience, Murphy came to Brown after spending five years at the University of Rhode Island.
At URI, Murphy served as the Rams’ Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach from 2020-24. In 2024 at URI, Murphy helped lead the Rams to one of the best seasons in program history, winning a program record 11 games, finishing the season ranked No. 9/11 in the final national polls, capturing the CAA Football Championship and winning a first round game in the FCS Playoffs.
Murphy coached two All-Americans in 2024 in running back Malik Grant, who earned AP Honorable Mention All-America honors, as well as receiver Marquis Buchanan who earned Second Team Stats Perform All-America.
Prior to URI, Murphy spent two seasons as the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach at Holy Cross. In his second season in 2019, Murphy helped lead the Crusaders to the Patriot League title and the program’s first bid to the FCS Playoffs since 2009. The team led the Patriot League in several offensive categories that season including scoring offense (28.3 points/game), total offense (409.0 yards/game), rushing yards (189.0 yards/game), passing efficiency (135.4), third down conversions (43.9 percent), and yards per play (6.3) among others in league games. In 2018, the team ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per game.
Murphy spent two seasons as the run game coordinator while coaching slot receivers and running backs at Tufts in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, the Jumbos averaged 31.5 points per game and led the NESCAC with 239.3 rushing yards per game.
Murphy served as the head coach at Division II Saint Anselm College from 2008-2015 in addition to serving as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was named the Northeast-10 Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2014 after leading the team to a program record for victories and their first winning season (6-5) since the revival of the program in 1999. During his time at St. Anselm, Murphy coached 30 All-Northeast-10 selections, three Northeast-10 Rookies of the Year and two All-Americans, including Justin Bernard who became the NCAA Division II all-time receptions leader.
Murphy does have prior coaching experience in the Ivy League, having served as the defensive ends coach at Harvard during the 2003 season.
A 1996 graduate of Northeastern, Murphy saw action as a linebacker, tight end and fullback for the Huskies.
