Campus Resources
Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA)
The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University supports and generates rigorous and accessible research, performance, art, and scholarship on a broad range of pressing issues related to race and ethnicity to help build greater understanding and a more just world. Their aim is to build community among scholars and students working on race and ethnicity, develop new and enhance existing research networks, foster generative public conversation on pivotal issues, enhance public knowledge about racial and ethnic discrimination, and continue to national and community efforts to create a more just society.
Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (CSSJ)
The Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice is a scholarly research center with a public humanities mission. Recognizing that racial and chattel slavery were central to the historical formation of the Americas and the modern world, the CSSJ creates a space for the interdisciplinary study of the historical forms of slavery while also examining how these legacies shape our contemporary world.
Counseling and Psychological Services
Students experiencing homesickness, academic or general anxiety, or any other emotional difficulty that is interfering with their schoolwork may benefit from a consultation with a psychotherapist. Students may call (x3-3476) to make an appointment. Advisors are also encouraged to call CAPS if they have questions about student behavior.
Hillel
Hillel, the center for Jewish life on campus, is one of the largest, most exciting, and versatile organizations at Brown and RISD. Hillel is an integral part of campus social, cultural, educational, political and religious life.Â
LGBTQ Center
The LGBTQ Center provides educational and emotional support for, foster communities among, and advocate on behalf of Brown’s LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty. The LGBTQ Center provides a safe and affirmed space for students to gather and to do academic, social, and political work. Center staff are always happy to meet with individual LGBTQ students.
Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life
Living, studying, and working within a rigorous academic community prompt and require responses to a host of profound questions. OCRL seeks to create spaces and opportunities within the immediate environs of the University and in its larger circles where such questions can be voiced and explored openly, whether these concerns originate within religious, philosophical, ethical, or spiritual practice.
Office of International Student & Scholar Services
International students can benefit from resources both before and after their arrival in the United States. OISSS supports the integration of international students and scholars into the Brown community.
Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender
The mission of the center is to engage the campus community through a feminine praxis of activism and academics. The center provides programs, resources, and meeting space for any member of the campus community interested in examining issues around gender, especially as it intersects with other markers of identity.
Student Accessibility Services
SAS coordinates and facilitates services for students with medical, physical, psychological, and learning disabilities. Services for students with disabilities are provided by many offices of the University and are coordinated through SAS. The SAS office is also available to meet with any student who may be wondering if they have a disability and seeking an evaluation or additional information to assist them.
Student Support Services
The Student Support Services staff is available to assist students with a wide-range of issues, including mental and physical health concerns, injury, concussions, family and personal concerns, that might arise during their time at Brown. They serve as a sounding board to discuss options, help refer students to the right set of resources for their situation, and can offer general support when a student is not sure where to start. Student Support Services also provides crisis services 24 hours a day for students dealing with personal or family emergencies. Students can meet during the week with Student Support Services deans by appointment, or via the Dean of the Day structure. The Administrator-on-Call system (evenings and weekends, 863-4111) ensures that students receive immediate support and resource information after business hours.
Title IX and Gender Equity
Fostering and maintaining an inclusive campus climate that is free of discrimination and harassment is central to Brown’s commitment to excellence. As the University develops programs, policies and procedures to promote access and diversity, the University also aligns its efforts to comply with various civil rights laws designed to protect all community members from discrimination. One of those laws is Title IX of the Education Amendment Act of 1972, which prohibits gender and sex-based discrimination specifically in higher education.
Undocumented, First-Generation and Low-Income Student Center (U-FLi Center)
The Undocumented, First-Generation, and Low-Income Student Center is a communal, learning, and advocacy space for members of the Brown community who identify with the undocumented, first-generation college, and/or low income student experience. By providing undergraduate students with a dedicated space that affirms their intersectional identities, the U-FLi Center aims to contribute to the endurance and success of U-FLi students at Brown.
