Sailing Program Information
The Brown University sailing team is one of the oldest and most successful organizations on campus. The Brown University Yacht Club was founded in 1896 and was one of the first college sailing programs in the country. The current sailing team is consistently ranked within the top 10 in the country in both open and coed sailing, racing in the highly competitive New England District (NEISA) of College Sailing. In 2024, the Bears won the Fowle Trophy awarded to the best overall team in college sailing. In 2023, Brown won the College Sailing (ICSA) Match Race National Championship. In 2019, the Bears won the College Sailing Women's National Championship, was ranked No. 1 nationally, and finished fifth at the Coed Dinghy National Championship. It is an active athletic team with: two full-time coaches, six weekend coaches, practices four days a week, and competition in several regattas every weekend from September through November and March through May.
Brown sailing is divided into two parts:
Varsity Coed and Women's Sailing: Team members practice 3-4 days a week and compete in regattas on the weekends throughout the fall and spring seasons. The varsity program is fully integrated into Brown Athletics, and the student-athletes are treated like DI athletes with strength and conditioning, athletic trainers, dietitian/nutritionist, strong funding, and academic support. The varsity roster has approximately 35 student-athletes per year. The sailing team became a varsity sport prior to the 2020-21 academic year.
Club Sailing Team: Team members practice 3-4 days a week and compete in regattas on the weekends throughout the fall and spring seasons. The Club team competes in both dinghy and keelboat/offshore regattas and team size is approximately 15-20 student-athletes per year with tryouts usually taking place in the fall season.
We meet four days a week at Wayland Arch on Brown Street:
Tuesday and Thursday: 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday: 3:00 p.m.
Practice is made up of a large variety of drills and practice races that emphasize boat handling, boat speed, short course tactics and strategy, and team racing.
Location: We sail at the Ted Turner '60 Sailing Pavilion, part of the Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston R.I. A short drive from campus, Edgewood boasts some of the finest winds on Narragansett Bay. In addition, the varied shoreline allows the team to practice in a multitude of different conditions that mimic the varied venues in college sailing. The club is approximately four miles from campus and visible from the Sciences Library.
Boats: The fleet is comprised of 18 Zim Flying Juniors (FJs), 18 Laser Performance Z420s, 6 Lasers, and is supported by two motorboats. The FJs were purchased in 2025 and the Z420s were purchased in 2023.
Meetings: Every Wednesday night the team holds a meeting at which the team reviews previous weeks results, assign teams for upcoming regattas, discuss tactics and rules, plan social activities, etc.
Barry Family Director of Sailing Chair: John Mollicone, Boston University '98, has been the head coach of coed and women's sailing at Brown since 1999. Since coming to Brown, John has coached 106 All-Americans, 156Â Academic All-Americans, 157Â All-New England Sailors and has led the Bears to 89 National Championship appearances. During this time the team has finished top five at 47 National Championships and has won 27 New England Championships and eight Atlantic Coast Championships and Fall Showcases.
