Alumni Spotlight – Jim Turner ’86
A four-year member of the Brown basketball team and a member of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame, Jim Turner ’86 led the Bears to their first ever Ivy League Championship in 1986, earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament against Syracuse. Â
During his senior campaign, Turner was named Ivy League Player of the Year and was selected First Team All-Ivy. Turner still holds the program records for field goal percentage in a career - .602 (358 of 595, 1982-86), field goal percentage in a season - .628 (199 of 317, 1985-86) and field goal percentage in a game - .933 (14 of 15, vs. Penn). Off the court, Turner held a 3.67 grade point average and earned Academic All-American honors.
After his time on College Hill, Turner attended the Fuqua Business School at Duke University where he acquired his Master of Business Administration (MBA) while achieving a grade point average of 3.9. Similar to Brown, Turner received academic honors and was named a Fuqua Scholar and was also awarded a Corbett Memorial Scholarship in recognition of his first year academic achievement.
After attending Duke, Turner had a highly successful career in finance and was most recently the Managing Director, Head of Debt Capital Markets for BNP Paribas. Turner held this position since April of 2000 and will be retiring after his numerous accomplishments at the end of June. In the Debt Capital Markets, Turner brought companies such as IBM and Disney to the bond market.Â
Prior to holding the Managing Director position at BNP Paribas, Turner was an Associate Director for Debt Capital Markets to Corporate at Bear Stearns.
Turner’s finance career began at Lehman Brothers as an Analyst, and after just two short years he was promoted to Vice President. From there, Turner was a Vice President at UBS Securitas and Citicorp Securities.
