Debbie Ching, Soccer
Alumni Spotlight – Debbie Ching ’83
A member of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame, Debbie Ching ’83 helped the women’s soccer team capture two Ivy League titles in her time on College Hill. An English concentrator at Brown, she owned career records for goals (40) and points (93) and was sixth all-time in assists (13). Today, she stands second in goals and points and is 13th in assists. Ching was a three-time first team All-Ivy selectee, earned All-East and All-New England recognition and was named Ivy League Tournament Most Valuable Player as a sophomore. She later received her MBA from Columbia.Â
The Honolulu, Hawaii native is currently the Principal of Ching Consulting. Located in Honolulu, the firm provides marketing strategy, planning and project management services to private, public and non-profit organizations. Over her career, Ching has worked successfully with an extensive array of clients including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, Kendall Jackson Wines and Victoria Ward, Ltd. The firm is currently engaged in a project that supports socio-economically disadvantaged students' access to college.
Ching was appointed by Secretary of Defense William Cohen to serve on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) from 1999 to 2001 and in 2001 was selected to serve as the Committee’s National Vice Chair. The Committee, which was made up of 34 civilians who were selected from their achievements in business and their professions and civic affairs, advised the Secretary on matters relating to women in the military.
At her high school alma mater, Punahou School, Ching was the head coach of the girls varsity soccer program for nine successful years. She was an officer and member of the Pacific Club Board of Governors and a past Chair of the YWCA of Oahu Nominating Committee.
Appointed by former President Ruth Simmons, Ching currently serves on the Brown Advisory Council on Athletics. The Council is responsible for providing input and recommendations to the President and Corporation on long-term policy and planning issues, strategic direction, and efficacy of implementation concerning the athletic and physical education program and its relationship to the overall educational mission of the University.
