BrownBears.com will feature one former male and female student-athlete each month who has gone on to achieve success in the workplace, as well as exhibit the spirit of Brown University within the community. The monthly installments will provide highlights of the selectees’ athletic careers at Brown and offer a glimpse into their current career paths.
A four-year letterwinner for the Brown basketball team, Bernard Muir ’90 appeared in all games as a junior and senior prior to a decorated career in athletics administration. In his senior season as team captain, Muir was honored with the J. Richmond Fales Trophy, which recognizes the team member that contributes the most to the sport at Brown through sportsmanship, performance, and influence.
After graduating with a degree in Organizational and Behavioral Management, Muir got his start in athletics as an administrative assistant at Butler in 1990 prior to earning a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 1992.Following his love of basketball, Muir served as assistant director of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship from 1992-98 before rising to director of operations for the event from 1998-2000.
A stint as the University of Notre Dame’s associate athletics director for student welfare and development preceded the first of three appointments as athletic director with notable NCAA institutions for Muir. From 2005-09, he led Georgetown’s administration in noble fashion, garnering Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” distinction in 2007.
After Georgetown, Muir’s tenure as the Delaware Blue Hens’ athletic director was highlighted by increased competitiveness and major facility upgrades. Muir spent three seasons with the Blue Hens before being appointed athletic director for Stanford on July 27, 2012.
With the Cardinal, Muir extended the school’s Directors’ Cup trophy streak to 20 seasons as the nation’s top athletic program and their impressive streak of at least one NCAA team championship to 38 seasons.
Currently a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and a member of the board of directors of USA Basketball, Muir was recently honored with the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award on Jan. 15, 2015. The award recognizes distinguished individuals on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their collegiate athletic careers.
