Brown Football 1999 Ivy League Champions
As the clock ticked down on Brown's 1999 football season a group of Brown players doused head football coach Phil Estes with a bucket of Gatorade, signaling that the game was over and Brown had captured the Ivy League Football Championship with a 23-6 victory over Columbia. Brown's Ivy title was its second ever, having captured the championships in 1976.
The victory capped a magical season that saw Brown post a 9-1 overall record, the most wins since the 1926 Iron Men (9-0-1). The Bears finished the season with a seven-game winning streak, capturing 15 of their last 16 games over two years. Brown shared the Ivy title with Yale, a last-second winner over Harvard, with 6-1 Ivy League records. Brown, which finished its season ranked 25th in the nation, defeated Yale 25-24 on the opening day of the season.
Brown's Class of 2000 ended its career as the most successful class of the last century, compiling a four-year 28-12 record, besting the 27 wins for Brown teams from 1976-1979.
It also marked the end of the career of senior quarterback James Perry, who finished his career as the finest passer in Ivy League football history, walking away with 10 Ivy League passing records and 18 Brown football records.
The end of the game set off a wild celebration, with the partisan Brown crowd storming the filed, tearing down the goal posts on the Elmgrove Avenue end of the field. The goal posts' uprights would later be seen making their way down Tabor Avenue and onto the Brown Campus.
