IRVING, Texas – Brown senior defensive lineman John Starman has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious 2025 William V. Campbell Trophy, the College Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced on Wednesday.
The Campbell Trophy is college football's premier scholar-athlete award and is presented annually to the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
Starman is one of 44 players from across FCS Football to be named a semifinalist, with all eight of the Ivy League schools each having a representative on the list. Nationwide across all levels, 177 semifinalists have a combined grade-point average of 3.60. The NFF will announce 12-16 finalists for the award on October 22.
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the award must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility.
A native of Miami, Florida and graduate of Christopher Columbus High School, Starman has been able to give back to his hometown and his high school through a partnership with the Carlitos House. Since 2021, he has served as a student ambassador for the grief support organization for students who have lost a parent. After losing his father during his freshman year of high school, John worked to bring the organization to his high school and has helped numerous students at his alma mater get through the pain of losing a parent. Every summer, he returns as an ambassador and meets with students to give back and support those who have suffered the loss of a family member. Since he started the chapter at Christopher Columbus in 2021, John's leadership has helped the number of students receiving support double, from about 10 in its first year to now over 20 in 2025.
