WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Brown Bears repeated as CRC 7s National Champions with a 12-5 victory over Army West Point in the final game Sunday evening at the Maryland Sportsplex.
"Defense was the theme of the weekend and it was stout when it mattered most," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach. "We were able to use our entire roster and are so proud of their composure under pressure. We were lucky to have so much support in the stands from family, friends, and alumni. We felt the love and the fed off that energy.
"Kate Muldoon was fantastic all weekend, leading with grace. Akilah Cathey has such powerful runs and senior Morgan Cunningham capped off an incredible career with a clutch try when it mattered. I'm also so proud of my amazing coaching staff that prepared this team for this championship."
Brown cruised past Navy in the semifinal with a 27-5 victory to draw a Championship re-match with Army.
Akilah Cathey opened the scoring just seconds into the match against Navy and Nikki Lynch added another try three minutes later.
Mia Young struck for a long try to cut into Brown's lead before the half and make it 12-5.
Kate Muldoon, the Tournament MVP, responded in the second half with two tries sandwiched around Lynch's second try of the match to push Brown's score to 27.
In the Championship re-match against Army, Cathey gave the Bears a 5-0 lead 1:30 into the game following a great off-load from Muldoon. Murray hit the conversion to put the Bears ahead 7-0.
Lynch saved a try four minutes into the match as she dragged a Cadet out of bounds to gain possession deep in the Brown zone. Two minutes later, Morgan Cunningham broke free for an 85-meter run and score for a 12-0 lead heading into the break.
Lynch recorded her second try-saving tackle of the match 11 minutes into the match to keep the Cadets off the board.
Army broke through in the final minute to make it 12-5, but the Cadets were unable to regain possession to give Brown its second consecutive CRC Title.
