2023 Men's Crew Season Preview

Brown men’s crew is ready to begin its spring schedule at Boston University on Saturday on the Charles River. The 2022 version of the Bears finished fourth as a team in the IRA Championship and the Varsity Eight is coming off a bronze medal performance.
Brown is set to compete in eight regattas this season, capping off with the 2023 IRA Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
Previewing the Michalson Cup
Brown and Boston University open the spring season against each other for the Michalson Cup. In the fall, BU's Championship Four crew clocked in at 15:59.569 to place ninth out of 15 finished crews, while the Championship Eight boat finished 18th out of 25 crews in a time of 14:06.787.
In the Foot of the Charles in early November, BU's "A" crew finished in a time of 11:41.9 to place fourth out of 15 crews, the Terriers' "B" boat was fifth, clocking in at 11:50.2 and BU's "C" and "D" crews were 10th and 11th, respectively.

The Fall Slate
Brown started the fall at the Head of the Housatonic on Oct. 8. The Bears’ 'A' crew clocked a time of 13:24.1 to finish second, while the second Bruno crew finished sixth with a time of 13:48.8.
Later in October at the 57th Head of the Charles, the Championship Eight 'A' crew clocked a time of 13:43.057 to finish eighth among 25 finishing crews and sixth amongst collegiate crews. Brown's 'B' crew posted a time of 14:04.380 to finish 16th overall and 12th among collegiate crews. Brown's Club Four finished sixth among 48 finishing crews with a time of 16:57.372. Club Four finished sixth among 48 finishing crews with a time of 16:57.372 and the Bruno Club Eight 'B' crew posted a time of 14:47.148 to finish eighth among 39 finishing crews.
Key Returners
Brown returns 36 members of the team from last season, including 25 who raced in last year’s IRA Championship, making this year an experienced group.
Seniors Harry Church, Kai Hoite, Simon Hatcher and Will Legenzowski and juniors Gabriel Mahler, Charlie Fargo, Jack DiGiovanni raced in the Varsity Eight a season ago.
Juniors Willem Stoop, Ian Burnett, Nathan Swidler and Josh Golbus and sophomores James Scott, Will Thayer and Kay O’Donnell rowed in the Second Varsity Eight.
Seniors George Lawton and Adrian Johansen, juniors Connor Brown and Matthew Rose and sophomores Connor Prior and Marcus Winter competed in the Third Varsity Eight.
Racing in the Varsity Four at last season’s IRA’s were senior Mathijs Deetman, junior Matthew Boranian and sophomores Gordan Milovac, Ben Jackson and Lizzie Mitchell.
Newcomers
12 freshmen have been added to the roster and most have already seen time on the water in the fall. The group consists of: Ivan Augustinov, Mees du Croo de Jongh, Nick Gaensler, Gavin Green, Tristan Green, Tom Griffin, Davis Kelly, Willem LeBrun, Joseph Olagundoye, Vijay Ramakrishnan, Dom Valt and David Person.
The Schedule
Following the season opener at BU, the team heads to Florida for the IRA Sarasota Invitational against Washington and Yale where the Bears and Bulldogs will compete for the Albert Cup (April 1). Brown is then back in New England at Harvard for the Stein Cup (April 8), home against Northeastern for the Dreissigacker Cup (April 15), at Dartmouth for the Atalanta Cup (April 22) and at Princeton for the Content Cup (April 29). Eastern Sprints is next for the Bears (May 14) before the 2023 IRA Championship (June 2-4).
