TOWSON, Md. – The Brown Bears (5-1, 0-0 Ivy League) suffered a 3-2 overtime loss against the VCU Rams (4-3, 0-1 A10) Sunday afternoon on Towson's campus, ending the program-best five game winning streak to begin a a season.
Lexi Pellegrino led the Bears offensively and scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and Julia Hitti recorded two defensive saves on the other side of the field to bring her career total to six.
"We played 30 minutes of the best hockey we've played all season; we pressed well and created a number of high quality scoring opportunities," said head coach Britt Broady. "Capitalizing on more of those opportunities would have changed the energy and momentum of the game going into the second half. We let VCU stay in the game and they fought hard to push the match into overtime."
Kate McCallum gave the Bears the early lead halfway into the opening quarter, finishing a centering pass from Lucy Adams for her second goal of the season.
After Adams hit the post five minutes into the second quarter, Pellegrino doubled Brown's lead, finishing for her fifth goal of the season after her initial shot was stopped by Sheridan Messier (3 saves).
VCU had the lone penalty corner opportunity of the first half but were unable to generate a shot. Brown goalkeeper Jodie Brine (4 saves) recorded a pair of saves in the opening half.
Brown's first penalty corner came halfway into the third quarter, but Pellegrino's shot was wide of Messier and the net.
