
Women’s Crew Gains 24th Consecutive Berth into NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Brown University women's crew has earned an at-large bid into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships set for Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla., from May 28-30, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.

Brown will compete in the NCAA Championships for the 24th consecutive time and stands as one of three programs, along with Princeton and Washington, to take part in all 23 championships since the event's inception in 1997. (The event was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19). Under head coach John Murphy the Bears have won seven NCAA titles, with the most recent occurring in 2011.
The Bears' first varsity eight gained the No. 17 seed and will race in heat one out of lane one on Friday, May 28 at 9:00 a.m. against No. 9 seed Princeton, No. 1 seed Texas, No. 8 seed California, and No. 16 seed Tennessee.
Brown's second varsity eight earned the No. 8 seed and will race in heat one out of lane four on Friday, May 28 at 9:48 a.m. against No. 17 seed Alabama, No. 9 seed Southern Methodist, No. 1 seed Washington, and No. 16 seed Princeton.
The Bears' varsity four garnered the No. 7 seed and will race in heat two out of lane four on Friday, May 28 at 10:48 a.m. against No. 18 seed Gonzaga, No. 10 seed Princeton, No. 2 seed Texas, and No. 15 seed Tennessee.
The championship, this year co-hosted by the University of Central Florida and Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, is composed of 22 teams. Ten conferences were awarded automatic qualification and the remaining 12 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the championship field.
Teams qualifying for the championship as an automatic qualifier or as an at-large are required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. For the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four, all 22 boats are seeded into four heats.
After receiving approval to compete on April 2, Brown raced three times this spring with all three NCAA boats posting 4-0 records. The Bears' first varsity eight and second varsity eight both defeated Rhode Island, Boston University, Holy Cross, and Northeastern while the varsity four topped URI, BU, Boston College, and Northeastern.
