PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University football has made multiple position changes within its coaching staff with Ryan Mattison becoming offensive coordinator, Eric Bunker moving to wide receivers coach, and Willie Edwards shifting to running backs coach, Brown head coach James Perry announced on Monday.
Â
Mattison – who has served as the Bears' tights end coach and recruiting coordinator since arriving at Brown in 2019 – will take over as Brown's offensive coordinator while maintaining his duties as tight ends coach. In 2019, Mattison tutored tight end Emerson Logie to All-Ivy honors as part of an offensive unit that averaged 30.0 points per game. Mattison spent the previous two years (2017-18) as the tights ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Bryant University.
Â
Bunker becomes Brown's wide receivers coach after acting as the Bears' running backs coach since arriving on College Hill in 2019. In 2019, the Brown rushing attack more than doubled its production from the previous year under Bunker's tutelage, going from 65.1 to 153.4 yards per game. Prior to Brown, Bunker acted as the running backs coach at Bryant from 2017-18.
Â
Edwards shifts to become Brown's running backs coach after serving as the Bears' outside linebackers coach since coming to Brown in 2019. A 2020 inductee into the Rhode Island High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame who also served a Scouting Apprenticeship with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, Edwards was the head coach at the Moses Brown School in Providence, R.I. from 2011-18.
Â
The trio will work with an offense that averaged 30.0 points per game in 2019, more than doubling the scoring output from the year prior. The Bears averaged 454.4 yards of total offense – 15th best in the nation – and threw for 301.1 yards per game – 10th in the nation. Brown's returning offensive nucleus includes senior quarterback EJ Perry (Andover, Mass.) who led the nation in total offense (367.8 yards per game) and set an Ivy League record for total offense (3,678 yards) in 2019 after transferring to Brown from Boston College.
